Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase

19th century
Description

Circa 1820–1840 Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase / Display Cabinet

A handsome and highly functional mahogany secretaire bookcase, combining elegant display storage with a beautifully fitted writing desk. The upper section features a pair of glazed astragal doors with decorative geometric glazing bars, opening to shelving ideal for books, collectibles, or decorative displays. A moulded cornice crowns the piece, enhancing its classic proportions and timeless appeal.

The central fall-front secretaire opens to reveal a well-appointed interior fitted with multiple drawers, pigeonholes, and document compartments, providing an attractive and practical workspace. The writing surface is finished with a green inset panel, creating a traditional writing desk suitable for correspondence, study, or home office use.

Below, a pair of figured mahogany cupboard doors provide generous concealed storage. The cabinet showcases attractive flame mahogany veneers throughout, warm rich colour, and fine craftsmanship, making it a striking statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The piece exhibits an attractive, naturally aged patina, with the lower section having mellowed to a lighter golden mahogany tone over the years, while the upper section retains a richer colour. This gentle variation is typical of antique furniture and contributes to its charm and authenticity.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of furniture combining an upper glazed cabinet for book storage with a lower chest or cupboard section containing a drop-down or slide-out writing desk. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces provided a compact workspace and library storage for private residences.

Classic secretaire bookcases were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, frequently finished with flame mahogany or satinwood veneers. Construction features usually include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass hardware, and glazed cabinet doors held by wooden astragal bars.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved timber details, irregular or slightly wavy historic glass panes, and original brass escutcheons or handles. Examining the back panels and drawer bases for hand-sawn tool marks and age-related timber shrinkage aids in verifying age.

Anchor a living room or home office with a secretaire bookcase, using the upper display shelves for curated ceramics and books alongside contemporary art objects. Balance the deep wood tones by pairing the cabinet with neutral wall colours, soft linen upholstery, and simple modern lighting.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the grain. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber from warping or the veneer from lifting.
