Late Victorian Walnut Window Seat Professionally Upholstered in Robert Kime

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb late Victorian walnut window seat dating from around 1880, beautifully and professionally upholstered in Robert Kime’s celebrated ‘Komon’ linen in the Blue colourway. The elegant walnut frame stands on finely turned legs and retains a wonderful rich, mellow patina developed over more than a century. The seat has been expertly restored with new upholstery and finished with traditional double piping, creating a crisp, tailored finish that enhances the quality of the craftsmanship. Robert Kime was one of Britain’s most influential interior designers, renowned for creating timeless, layered interiors for private clients and historic houses. His textiles are highly sought after, and the iconic Komon design, inspired by traditional Japanese geometric motifs, brings a sophisticated contemporary edge to this classic Victorian piece.

Condition: Excellent antique condition. The walnut frame is solid and sturdy with only light age-related wear consistent with its age. The upholstery is professionally executed, clean and in excellent condition, with a beautifully finished double-piped edge.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian window seats were designed as low-profile, elongated seating solutions for alcoves, bay windows, and wide hallways. They typically feature turned or carved solid wood legs, structured aprons, and fully upholstered upper cushions tailored for comfort and utility.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak for the framework and legs. Internal seat structures relied on wooden framing, coil springs, horsehair padding, and natural fibre webbing, topped with wool, linen, or velvet upholstery.

Authentic pieces display period-specific joinery such as mortise and tenon construction, hand-turned leg profiles, and natural surface patination on the timber. Inspecting the underside often reveals historical tool marks, original wood tone variations, and period framing techniques.

An antique window seat functions effectively at the foot of a bed, within a hallway, or positioned beneath a window in a living area. Reupholstering the piece in modern or patterned textiles allows historical woodwork to complement contemporary colour schemes.

Maintain the walnut framework by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying beeswax occasionally along the grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber cracking, and vacuum the upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment.
