Georgian Rare Engraved Glass Sugar Bowl or Preserve Pot with Acorn Finial

18th century
Description

This is a rare, Georgian engraved glass preserve pot or sugar bowl, with its original lid, dating from the second half of the 18th century.

The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 250 years of use.

It has a waisted cup-shaped bowl and measures 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The bowl is engraved with a stylised sunflower and leaf fronds. The bowl is 8 cm (3.2 inches) in height without the lid and 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in height with the lid in place. It sits on a short, conical foot with a rough pontil mark to the underside that measures 8 cm. (3.2 inches) in diameter.

The lid is engraved in the same form as the bowl and is almost certainly the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the bowl and is an excellent fit. It is engraved with the same sunflower/leaf frond decoration and has an acorn finial with air tears to the wider part of the "acorn".

There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. An impressive piece of period glass in excellent condition.

English lead glass weighing in at 440 g. (~ 1 lb.).

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
