Antique Swat Valley Dowry Chest

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This ornate chest bears all the hallmarks of exceptional craftsmanship. It was carved from Himalayan cedar, a wood favoured by artisans due to its lightweight and durable qualities. This would have made it easier to carve and shape the overall structure.

However, even with the workable choice of wood, the intricate indentions that adorn the face of the chest would have required considerable skill and patience to create. This includes the interlocking floral patterns that run along the horizontal sides, and the larger leaf-like structures that embellish the front two legs. But perhaps the most striking detail of all is the softly rendered rosette carved into the sliding door, an ancient symbol of the natural cycle of life.

Despite being over 100 years old, the chest remains in good condition. Its sturdy cedar-joined construction allows it to continue serving a practical purpose, whilst its intricate design makes it an attractive feature.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Swat Valley dowry chests, traditionally crafted in the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan, were presented to brides to hold textiles and personal heirlooms. These chests feature architectural panel carving and distinctive geometric motifs reflective of regional folk art traditions.

Traditional dowry chests were constructed from native hardwoods, predominantly deodar cedar or walnut, using mortise and tenon joinery without metal nails. The surfaces were carved by hand using chisels to create deep relief geometric and floral patterns.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved geometric rosettes, sunbursts, or archways, along with high corner posts or extended leg stiles. The timber usually exhibits hand-planed tool marks, uneven wear around handles or sliding doors, and natural age patina in recessed carved areas.

A carved dowry chest functions effectively as a focal piece in an entryway, living room, or at the foot of a bed. Pairing the dark carved wood with neutral textiles or minimalist contemporary art highlights the textured craftsmanship of the piece.

Dust the carved surfaces regularly with a soft dry brush to reach recessed areas without pulling on loose grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the wood and keep it away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage or cracking.
