Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Inlaid silver cartouche in the base: allows engraving without exposing underlying copper.
Traces of copper on the underside scallops: fused Sheffield plate metalwork.
Embossed floral and foliate border: fashionable late Georgian naturalistic styling.
Fluted swing handle with cast flower bosses: hand-assembled early nineteenth-century construction.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Regency swing basket in Old Sheffield Plate displays a substantial silver finish with a good heavy quality and minor signs of age-related wear. The design incorporates a lobed rim with a detailed floral repousse border, chased scrollwork, and an overhead swing handle with embossed flower motifs attached via hinged hardware. A blank inlaid silver cartouche sits on the body, while the interior bowl curves smoothly down to a flat rectangular base. Measuring 11 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, the basket works as a dining table centrepiece to hold fruit, small decorative items, or seasonal displays in a traditional or modern interior setting.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a metalworking process developed in the eighteenth century where a sheet of silver was fused to copper before being rolled into sheets and crafted into functional items such as baskets, trays, and hollowware.

Baskets from this period were formed from fused copper and silver sheets, frequently incorporating die-struck floral borders and cast elements soldered around the outer rim and handle.

Authentic pieces often exhibit slight copper exposure on high-wear areas, termed bleeding, and may feature turned silver wire edges or inset sterling silver shields intended for engraved crests.

An antique silver basket functions as a table centrepiece for displaying fruit, a sideboard accent, or a decorative focal point placed on a hallway console.

Maintain silver plate by polishing gently with a soft cotton cloth and a non-abrasive silver cream to avoid stripping the thin surface layer of fused silver.
