French Walnut Marble Top Bedside Cabinet (Chevet), Napoleon III Period, C.1860–1880

19th century
Description

French Walnut Marble Top Bedside Cabinet

A good quality French walnut bedside cabinet, or chevet, dating to the Napoleon III period, circa 1860–1880. The cabinet is of well-balanced and practical form, with a rectangular marble top above a single drawer and cupboard door, the latter centred with an attractive figured walnut panel. The timber displays a warm, consistent colour and pleasing grain throughout, complemented by the subtle contrast of the marble top.

The proportions are particularly usable, making it an ideal bedside or occasional cabinet. The restrained design allows it to sit comfortably within both traditional and more contemporary interiors, while the original small brass castors add a practical and characteristic French detail. Internally, the cabinet is fitted with a single granite shelf, likely a later addition, but a useful and sympathetic feature in keeping with the piece.

Dimensions:

Height: 76.5 cm (30 1/8")

Width: 39.5 cm (15 1/2")

Depth: 31.5 cm (12 3/8")

Condition:

Structurally sound and in good overall order. There are minor splits and small chips to the veneers in places, consistent with age and use. The handles are possible replacements, though they are of period style and sit well with the piece. The catch has been replaced. The cabinet retains its original small brass castors and presents well with a pleasing, honest surface.
