Japanese Kuruma-dansu (Wheeled Chest)

19th century
Description

A striking Japanese Kuruma‑Dansu (wheeled chest), crafted in solid timber and retaining its wonderfully time‑worn surface and original ironwork. The hinged lid opens to reveal a clean, pale interior, and to the underside of the lid survives a fragmented but evocative Japanese shrine label (ofuda) depicting Ebisu, the Shinto deity of prosperity and good fortune. This would have been placed inside to bless the contents and ensure safe keeping. The front is reinforced with vertical battens and fitted with iron ring handles as is the back and sides. The chest’s deep, dark patina, worn edges, and honest marks of use speak to a long working life. A superb decorative storage piece, equally at home in a hallway, living space, or as a characterful feature in a retail or studio setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A kuruma-dansu is a traditional Japanese mobile storage chest set on wooden wheels, historically used by merchants and households during the Edo and Meiji periods to quickly relocate valuables in the event of fire or emergency.

These chests were constructed from durable timbers such as keyaki, chestnut, or cedar, and were reinforced with hand-forged iron plates, heavy latches, and solid wooden wheels.

Authentic examples feature hand-forged iron hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-cut joinery such as mortise-and-tenon joints, integrated wooden wheels, and signs of historical surface wear.

This style of chest functions effectively as a low coffee table, a statement storage unit in a hallway, or an end-of-bed trunk in contemporary and eclectic living spaces.

Dust the timber regularly using a dry cloth, apply natural beeswax periodically to preserve the wood, keep the chest clear of direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and maintain dry ambient air to protect iron fittings.
