Fine Pair Antique Solid Silver Mounted Crystal Claret Jugs Serpent Handle 19thc

19th century
Description

Exceptional Pair of Continental Silver-Mounted Crystal Claret Jugs / Ewers, Late 19th Century

An elegant and highly decorative matched pair of late 19th-century claret jugs, combining finely blown crystal with richly engraved solid silver mounts, most likely of Continental (Austro-Hungarian or Bohemian) origin.

Each jug is beautifully proportioned with a generous, rounded crystal body rising into a tall, slender neck, creating a refined and balanced silhouette. The shoulders are encased in solid silver mounts, intricately hand-engraved with scrolling foliate decoration, acanthus leaf motifs, and fine linear detailing. A delicate beaded border frames the transition between metal and glass.

The handles are particularly distinctive, formed in an elegant scroll design and incorporating subtle serpent-form detailing—an ornamental feature often associated with high-quality Continental silverwork of the period.

Both jugs retain their original spherical glass stoppers, completing the classical form. The silver has developed a soft, natural patina, enhancing their antique character while remaining bright and highly presentable.

Condition:

Very good antique condition. Light surface wear and patina consistent with age. No major damage. A well-preserved and attractive pair.

Dimensions (each):

Height: approx. 31 cm (12.2 inches)

Width: approx. 13 cm (5.1 inches)

Total Weight: approx. 2.75 kg (combined)

A refined and decorative pair, ideal for formal dining, display, or interior design—offering both functionality and strong visual presence.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silver-mounted claret jug is a glass or crystal vessel fitted with a silver spout, collar, handle, and stopper, designed specifically for decanting and serving red wine.

These vessels typically combine lead crystal or glass bodies with solid silver or silver-plated metal mounts, often featuring hand-engraved detailing.

Authentic pieces generally display official assay office hallmarks stamped into the silver collar or handle, alongside hand-finished details on the glass base.

Displaying them as a symmetrical pair on a dining room sideboard, drink trolley, or inside a glass display cabinet creates a refined focal point.

Clean the glass interior with warm water and mild liquid soap, while applying a non-abrasive polish to the silver components using a soft cloth.
