Antique Pair Carved Giltwood Stools Upholstered Footstools French Style

1900 - 1920
Description

A very elegant pair of antique carved giltwood stools, beautifully decorated with crisp hand carved detail and finished in rich gold leaf. The frames are of excellent quality with classical fluted legs, carved floral paterae to the corners and a detailed frieze with interwoven and ribbon motifs, all showing strong influence from Louis XVI design.

They are upholstered in a soft golden damask with striped detailing, which complements the gilded frames well and gives a refined, decorative look. The cushions are generously padded making them both comfortable and practical.

Originally these stools would have been used as footstools or placed at the end of a bed or within a drawing room setting, often paired with a matching suite. Today they work just as well as occasional seating, dressing room stools or decorative accent pieces.

This is a particularly attractive and usable pair, with good proportions and strong decorative appeal, ideal for both classic and more contemporary interiors.

Condition Report

Very good overall condition for their age. The frames are solid with light, age related wear to the gilding. Upholstery is clean and presentable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style seating features Neoclassical design principles, including geometric symmetry, straight fluted legs, and classical motifs such as rosettes and leaf carving. Frames are typically constructed from hardwood and finished with gesso and gold leaf gilding.

Traditional construction involves carved hardwood frames, layer application of gesso, and water-gilded gold leaf. Internal upholstery historically utilises webbing, coil springs, horsehair padding, and natural fibre top fabrics like silk damask.

Authentic pieces show natural wear where the underlying red or yellow bole and white gesso show through the gold gilding. Look for hand-carved joinery, irregularities in hand-turned legs, and aged oxidation on exposed underside timber.

Position a pair symmetrically at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or flanking a fireplace hearth. The gilded finish provides visual warmth and acts as an accent alongside modern neutral upholstery.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry bristle brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve water gilding. Keep upholstered surfaces away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading and timber shrinkage.
