Carved Walnut Coffer with Figural Medallions

19th century
Description

A finely carved walnut coffer of strong Renaissance Revival character, the rectangular hinged lid enclosing a plain boarded interior, retaining its original iron hasp and lockplate. Executed in richly toned walnut, the exterior is profusely ornamented with deep, crisply defined relief carving of high quality. The front and sides are centred with circular portrait medallions depicting helmeted figures in profile, framed by elaborate scrolling acanthus foliage and strapwork of pronounced sculptural depth.

The lid is equally ornate, featuring a central armorial-style cartouche flanked by further helmeted heads within foliate surrounds, all enclosed within a repeating carved border. The canted corners are articulated with vertical stiff-leaf carving, while the lower edge is enriched with a continuous gadrooned or stylised leaf frieze. The coffer stands on shaped bracket feet, lending it a robust, architectural stance.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Coffers featuring carved profile medallions, often termed Romayne heads, gained widespread popularity across Europe during the Renaissance period. These carved figures typically depicted classical deities, historical emperors, or stylized soldiers, serving as symbolic representations of status and taste.

Traditional coffers were constructed from durable dense hardwoods such as solid walnut or oak, joined using hand-cut dovetails or mortise and tenon joinery. High-relief relief carvings were executed by hand, and iron hardware, including prominent lock plates and strap hinges, was forged for security.

Authentic period pieces display subtle variations in carving depth and surface texture from hand tools rather than uniform machine production. Inspecting the wood reveals natural shrinkage across the grain, localized wear on raised relief details, and patination within recessed areas.

A substantial carved chest functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, positioned beneath artwork, or placed at the foot of a bed for hidden textile storage. The rich texture of dark carved timber contrasts cleanly against neutral modern walls and minimalist upholstery.

Maintain carved timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax paste annually to nourish the wood and preserve the patination. Avoid placement directly adjacent to heat sources or in areas with extreme moisture fluctuations to prevent timber movement.
