Antique Silver Novelty Table Lighter - Canoe

19th century
Description

This is quite a rarity - an antique solid sterling silver table lighter, fashioned as a canoe and dating from the very end of the reign of Queen Victoria.

It is clearly hallmarked for London 1899 with the maker's mark of Stokes & Ireland Ltd. It is heavy and tactile, and is a fabulous condition. The open top, usually for rowers, is presumably an ashtray. Interesting.

Width: 3cm

Height: 5.5cm

Weight: 82g.

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Novelty silver table lighters are functional smoking accessories crafted from sterling or continental silver into decorative, non-traditional shapes such as boats, animals, or street lamps. Popularised in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, they were designed to sit on desks, sideboards, or dining tables as conversation pieces.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, housing an inner reservoir for fluid and an absorbent cotton wick. Flame stoppers and screw caps were integrated to prevent evaporation of the lighter fuel when not in use.

Authentic British silver pieces feature stamped hallmarks indicating the maker, silver purity standard (such as the lion passant for sterling), the assay office mark, and a date letter. Checking these stamps against official assay records confirms the age, origin, and metal purity.

An antique table lighter functions as a decorative sculpture when displayed on an office desk, coffee table tray, or within a bookshelf display. Pairing polished silver objects with dark woods or leather accessories creates a balanced vignette.

Gently wipe the silver with a dedicated silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive creams near delicate wicks or moving parts. Store the item in a dry, low-humidity environment to minimise oxidisation and preserve the hallmarks.
