A Fine Pair of Royal Crown Derby Twin-handled Lidded Vases by Charles Harris, 1906

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb and highly decorative pair of Royal Crown Derby twin-handled vases and covers, dating to 1906, and beautifully painted by the noted Derby artist Charles Harris.

These elegant vases are of fluted ovoid form, raised on striking scrolling figural feet enriched with bright turquoise and gilt decoration, and fitted with matching covers. The richly gilded twin scroll handles and lively turquoise details give the pair a wonderfully opulent appearance, strongly reminiscent of Sèvres-inspired decorative wares of the period.

The front of each vase is exquisitely hand-painted with a vibrant garden landscape featuring exotic birds in a fanciful setting, while the reverse is decorated with a beautifully painted bird in flight. The painting is full of movement and delicacy, and the pair is signed by the artist.

Charles Harris was one of Royal Crown Derby’s most admired painters of birds and flowers, especially associated with the much-loved ‘Chelsea Bird’ manner. He worked at the factory from the 1890s until 1911, before leaving for America, and signed examples of his work are increasingly sought after by collectors.

Both vases are fully marked to the base and retain their original covers.

A particularly fine and display-worthy pair, combining strong decorative impact with the added desirability of an identified Royal Crown Derby artist.

Condition: Excellent antique condition, with no damage, no restoration, and no glaze crazing.

Dimensions: Height 19 cm; width handle to handle 12 cm.
