Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A porringer is a small, shallow bowl featuring one or two flat horizontal handles, historically designed for serving liquid dishes such as porridge, pottage, broth, or soup. Popular across Europe and North America from the medieval period through the eighteenth century, they served as individual eating vessels in everyday dining.

Early English pewter porringers were typically cast in brass or bronze moulds using a tin alloy combined with small amounts of lead or copper to add durability. The bowl body and decorative pierced handle, or ear, were cast separately and subsequently joined together using a soft soldering process.

Authentic period pewter porringers often feature cast pierced handles with specific regional pattern variations, soft wear patterns consistent with age, and occasional touchmarks or maker stamps stamped near the rim or handle base. Original pieces usually show minor surface pitting, darkening, and evidence of hand-finishing rather than modern uniform casting.

An antique porringer works well as a decorative styling accent on a rustic sideboard, open kitchen shelving, or a coffee table tray. Its metallic texture and sculptural handle offer a understated focal point when paired with natural timber, stone, or linen backgrounds.

Antique pewter should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth and cleaned gently using mild soapy water if necessary, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive polishes that destroy natural oxidisation. Preserving the dark grey patina maintains the historical integrity and surface interest built up over centuries.
