Antique Edwardian Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase Glazed Display Cabinet Library Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome Edwardian mahogany breakfront bookcase with an elegant architectural shape and very useful proportions. The stepped breakfront form gives the piece a strong presence while still keeping a refined look that works well in both traditional and more modern interiors.

The upper section is fitted with glazed doors allowing books, silver or decorative objects to be displayed while remaining protected. The central door has an attractive arched astragal design which adds extra character and sets the piece apart from simpler examples. Below are three paneled cupboard doors opening to generous enclosed storage, ideal for larger books, papers or household items that you may prefer to keep out of sight.

The mahogany has a rich warm tone with pleasing figuring across the doors and a lovely mellow appearance. Raised on shaped bracket feet and finished with a decorative moulded frieze, this is an attractive and practical antique cabinet with plenty of storage.

Condition Report:

In good antique condition with age related wear in keeping with use. The colour and polish present well. There are light surface marks and minor signs of age as expected. Overall this is a solid and usable piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian breakfront bookcase is a large multi-section storage cabinet dating from the early 20th century, characterised by a central section that projects forward beyond the side wings, reflecting neoclassically inspired architectural proportions.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from polished hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-fitted astragal glass glazing, dovetail jointed construction, and solid panelled lower cupboard doors.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age consistent with period craftsmanship, including natural timber patination, original glass with slight surface distortions, brass lock mechanisms, and precise joinery lining the interior shelves.

A large breakfront cabinet creates an impactful focal point when placed against a contemporary neutral wall, using the upper glazed shelves for organised literature or ceramic collections and the lower cupboards for concealed storage.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually, ensuring the cabinet is positioned away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage.
