Antique Edwardian Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase Glazed Display Cabinet Library Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome Edwardian mahogany breakfront bookcase with an elegant architectural shape and very useful proportions. The stepped breakfront form gives the piece a strong presence while still keeping a refined look that works well in both traditional and more modern interiors.

The upper section is fitted with glazed doors allowing books, silver or decorative objects to be displayed while remaining protected. The central door has an attractive arched astragal design which adds extra character and sets the piece apart from simpler examples. Below are three paneled cupboard doors opening to generous enclosed storage, ideal for larger books, papers or household items that you may prefer to keep out of sight.

The mahogany has a rich warm tone with pleasing figuring across the doors and a lovely mellow appearance. Raised on shaped bracket feet and finished with a decorative moulded frieze, this is an attractive and practical antique cabinet with plenty of storage.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian breakfront bookcase is a storage piece from the early 20th century characterised by a central section that steps forward from the flanking side wings. These pieces typically feature glazed upper doors with astragal moulding, solid lower cupboards, and refined neoclassically inspired proportions.

Edwardian glazed cabinets were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or satinwood. Glazed upper sections featured individual hand-cut glass panes supported by timber astragal glazing bars, complemented by solid timber door panels and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic Edwardian pieces exhibit hand-finished dovetail joints inside drawers, original brass cabinet locks, and secondary woods like pine or oak used for back panels and drawer linings. Examining the reverse for age-appropriate timber shrinkage and checking for original float glass in the doors can also confirm age.

A substantial mahogany breakfront bookcase serves as a structural focal point in modern dining rooms, living spaces, or home offices. Interior designers often balance the dark wood by styling shelves with a mixture of leather-bound books, neutral stoneware ceramics, and framed artwork.

Maintain mahogany timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the finish. Clean glass panels with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays near the wood moulding, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
