Antique Edwardian Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase Glazed Display Cabinet Library Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome Edwardian mahogany breakfront bookcase with an elegant architectural shape and very useful proportions. The stepped breakfront form gives the piece a strong presence while still keeping a refined look that works well in both traditional and more modern interiors.

The upper section is fitted with glazed doors allowing books, silver or decorative objects to be displayed while remaining protected. The central door has an attractive arched astragal design which adds extra character and sets the piece apart from simpler examples. Below are three paneled cupboard doors opening to generous enclosed storage, ideal for larger books, papers or household items that you may prefer to keep out of sight.

The mahogany has a rich warm tone with pleasing figuring across the doors and a lovely mellow appearance. Raised on shaped bracket feet and finished with a decorative moulded frieze, this is an attractive and practical antique cabinet with plenty of storage.

Condition Report:

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Arched central astragal glazing bars: late Victorian and Edwardian revival cabinet making.
Compact depth of thirty-nine centimetres: proportions designed for early twentieth-century domestic rooms.
Carved wave moulding beneath the waist: decorative detail standard in turn-of-the-century workshops.
Flame mahogany veneers across the cupboard doors: matched grain selected for library furniture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian breakfront bookcase is an English mahogany library cabinet from 1900. The piece has a warm brown timber finish with visible figuring across the lower cupboard doors, complemented by a decorative moulded frieze running along the top of the base cabinets and shaped bracket feet at the base. The upper section contains three glazed doors with astragal moulding, with the central door featuring Gothic arch glazing bars. The lower section consists of three solid wooden cupboard doors. Measuring 204 cm high, 156 cm wide, and 39 cm deep, the cabinet is suitable for use in a study, library, or living room to display books and decorative objects in the upper glazed section while keeping household items stored out of sight in the lower cupboards. The visible condition includes age-related wear with light surface marks and minor signs of age consistent with use.

An Edwardian breakfront bookcase is a storage piece from the early 20th century characterised by a central section that steps forward from the flanking side wings. These pieces typically feature glazed upper doors with astragal moulding, solid lower cupboards, and refined neoclassically inspired proportions.

Edwardian glazed cabinets were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or satinwood. Glazed upper sections featured individual hand-cut glass panes supported by timber astragal glazing bars, complemented by solid timber door panels and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic Edwardian pieces exhibit hand-finished dovetail joints inside drawers, original brass cabinet locks, and secondary woods like pine or oak used for back panels and drawer linings. Examining the reverse for age-appropriate timber shrinkage and checking for original float glass in the doors can also confirm age.

A substantial mahogany breakfront bookcase serves as a structural focal point in modern dining rooms, living spaces, or home offices. Interior designers often balance the dark wood by styling shelves with a mixture of leather-bound books, neutral stoneware ceramics, and framed artwork.

Maintain mahogany timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the finish. Clean glass panels with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays near the wood moulding, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
