A very good early 18th century Oak Mule Chest, the plank top retaining the original butterfly hinges and opening to reveal a candle box and hidden secret drawers all above a frieze with the carved initials M D and the original lock with a key, the front and two drawers all with geometric panels and split bobbin turnings, the sides with fielded panels and the whole raised on bun feet. This piece has a wonderful, deep colour and patina.

A mule chest is a traditional wooden storage chest featuring a top lid above one or two drawers set into the base. Originating in the late 17th century, the design evolved throughout the 18th century as an intermediate step between the traditional coffer and the chest of drawers.

These chests were constructed using solid English oak joined with mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden pegs. Drawers featured hand-dovetailed joints, geometric mouldings, and turned wooden knobs or brass handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, irregular peg placement, historic lock plates, and natural oxidisation on internal surfaces. Geometric moulding, split-spindle turnings, and carved dates or initials are characteristic decorative features.
