This Georgian coffer dates from the mid-eighteenth century and follows an English country house style. The construction is solid oak finished in a warm brown colour with visible grain, accented by brass and iron hardware including a central keyhole escutcheon. The exterior displays a rectangular hinged top and a two-panelled front decorated with carved diamond lozenge motifs, set between vertical stiles that extend down to form simple stile legs. The piece measures 49 cm high and 50 cm deep. It functions as storage furniture for blankets or linen at the foot of a bed or beneath a window in a traditional living space or bedroom.

An oak coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, traditionally used for storing household linens, textiles, and valuables. By the 18th century, these pieces featured sturdy mortise and tenon joinery, raised panels, and decorative carved or moulded fronts.

Mid-18th-century coffers were crafted from solid oak using mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden dowel pegs. They commonly feature panelled lids and fronts, hand-forged iron hinges, and decorative brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period coffers display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular saw marks, and pegged joinery rather than modern screws or nails. Look for genuine age-related patination, historic lock plates, and natural wear to the base of the stile legs.

An oak coffer works well positioned at the foot of a bed for storing blankets or placed in a living area as a central coffee table. Pairing the dark timber with contemporary linen upholstery and modern ceramics creates a balanced, characterful interior.

Dust the wood regularly using a clean, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent timber movement or cracking.
