Pair of Antique Barley Twist Oak and Brass Candlesticks – Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A striking pair of early 20th-century English candlesticks, crafted in solid oak with elegant open barley twist stems and original floral brass sconces. The turned oak bases and shafts are exceptionally well-proportioned, with a deep, warm patina that brings out the natural figuring of the wood grain. Each top is fitted with a brass candle sconce, subtly scalloped and chased with petal-like detail. The brass has developed a rich patination over time, enhancing the warm tones of the oak beneath – circa 1920.

* Ideal for traditional or eclectic interiors, they offer both ambient charm and authentic historical presence.

Measurements:

Height: 12" (approx. 30.5cm)

Diameter: 5" (approx. 12.5cm)

Total weight: 684g

In good condition – The oak is solid, with minor surface wear and a few light marks, consistent with age. The brass sconces show mellow ageing and some oxidisation but are secure and undamaged.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Barley twist turning, characterised by its open or solid spiral design, originated in 17th-century Northern Europe and became popular in Britain during the Restoration period. The design experienced major revivals during the late Victorian, Edwardian, and 1920s periods for home accessories and dining table lighting.

Traditional wooden candlesticks were turned on a lathe using dense hardwoods such as oak or mahogany. For barley twist designs, the spiral sections were cut out manually or with specialised turning tools, and metal sconces, typically brass, were inserted at the top to safely hold candle wax.

Authentic period examples display signs of age such as slight variations in wood grain, subtle wear around the circular base, and natural tarnish or oxidisation on the brass sconces. The underside often features felt lining or circular lathe marks consistent with historic turning techniques.

Place a pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining centrepiece alongside neutral linen textiles and plain taper candles. Mixing the warm wood grain with modern ceramics or glass creates an engaging textural contrast in contemporary spaces.

Dust the turned wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber. Wipe brass inserts with a dry microfiber cloth to clean off wax residue, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that strip the aged patina.
