Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver bread baskets became prominent in European dining during the eighteenth century as functional table vessels for serving baked goods. By the early twentieth century, silversmiths produced these pieces with geometric pierced fretwork and low profiles to complement updated dining customs.

Traditional silver baskets are forged from sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5 percent pure silver combined with copper for structural durability. Pierced decorations are created using fret-saws or punching dies, followed by hand-soldering of handles and rim mouldings.

Authentic British sterling silver features a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal. These include the lion passant for silver purity, a town mark such as the leopards head for London, a date letter representing the year of manufacture, and an official makers mark.

A silver bread basket can be positioned as a dining table centrepiece or placed on a sideboard top. It functions when lined with linen napkins for table service, or left unlined to display decorative items or fresh fruit.

Wash the basket in warm water with mild dish soap and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Apply a specialist silver polish with a microfibre cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads that could scratch the surface.
