Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian period, silver-gilt tableware became highly fashionable for formal dining and dessert courses. Craftspeople coated solid sterling silver with a thin layer of gold to prevent tarnishing from acidic foods and to display wealth through opulent Rococo Revival designs.

These items were crafted from sterling silver and electroplated or fire-gilded with high-carat gold. Artisans used techniques such as repousse chasing for relief patterns and intricate hand-piercing to create decorative serving spoons.

Authentic British pieces feature official assay office marks, such as the leopards head for London, alongside a lion passant confirming sterling purity, a makers mark, and a specific date letter denoting the year of manufacture.

Cased silver pieces are best displayed open inside a glazed cabinet or placed on a dining room sideboard to highlight the contrasting velvet lining and gilded metalwork.

Silver gilt requires gentle maintenance; avoid harsh abrasive polishes which can wear away the thin gold layer. Clean softly with warm soapy water, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth, and store inside the original fitted case to protect against moisture.
