These large Louis XVI style wall lights originate from 1930. The pair is made of gilt bronze with a bright gold finish and two branches each. Every sconce exhibits detailed classical decoration, including a ribbon bow crest at the top, twin candle arms with foliate scrolling, and tassel drops hanging below. Each piece also incorporates a circular medallion motif near the suspension point and candle sockets holding white cylindrical candles. Measuring 86 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, these wall lights function well in traditional interior spaces. They suit placement in a dining room above a sideboard or in a hallway to provide layered illumination. The design reflects classic French chateau styling, bringing ornate metalwork and antique character to interior walls.

Louis XVI style lighting is characterised by Neoclassical symmetry, refined geometric proportions, and classical decorative motifs such as ribbon bows, tassels, foliate scrolls, and fluted columns.

Authentic French wall sconces of this period were typically cast in bronze and finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu, featuring hand-chiselled details and turned candle sockets.

Look for evidence of lost-wax casting, hand-chased surface ornament, heavy visual weight, threaded assembly components, and authentic oxidisation or wear to the gilded finish on unexposed rear surfaces.

Mount a pair symmetrically flanking a central mirror, artwork, or fireplace mantel to create a balanced focal point in classical or contemporary spaces.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals, water, or metal polishes that can remove the delicate original gilding.
