Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique 19th century Australian sterling silver christening mug; an addition to our collection of Australian silverware.

This exceptional antique sterling silver christening mug has a circular tapering form.

The body of the mug is embellished with fine bright cut engraved storks, reeds and ferns, all in a classic Japanese style.

The decoration to the body incorporates a large cartouche accented with the contemporary engraved initials 'IEHG'.

This antique christening mug is fitted with an impressive plain C-shaped handle.

Such late 19th century Australian examples are rare to the market.

The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian sterling silver christening mugs are small drinking vessels crafted as ceremonial gifts to celebrate a childs baptism. They typically feature intricate hand-engraving, period ornamentation such as Aesthetic Movement foliage, and structural details like gilt interiors to prevent chemical reactions between liquids and the silver metal.

These mugs are predominantly forged from sterling silver, an alloy comprising 92.5 percent pure silver combined with copper for strength. Artisans utilised techniques such as hand-chasing, fine line engraving, seam soldering, and electro-gilding to apply a thin gold wash to the interior.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmark stamps on the base or body, which denote silver purity, makers marks, and region or date codes. Genuine period items demonstrate precise hand-engraved details and natural age-related patina or slight wear to high points.

Small antique silver vessels work well as decorative accent pieces arranged on a sideboard top, bookshelf, or vanity tray. They can also serve functional roles in contemporary decor, such as holding small floral stems, pens, or desk items.

Maintain silver surfaces by gently polishing with a non-abrasive silver cloth to remove oxidisation while preserving the natural patina in carved grooves. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and direct immersion in hot water, which can erode the interior gilt lining over time.
