Antique Burr Walnut Cascading Open Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful and very well made antique burr walnut cascading open bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1920 period.

It is of superb quality and has a gorgeous design, it is also a very useful size. The sides and top are beautifully shaped, this has two useful drawers in the lower section, and it sits on cabriole legs.

We have had this revived and re-polished, it is in very good condition for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish. There has been a very slight bit of movement on the sides, this is not noticeable at all unless viewed from the back, it is seen in the close up images.

Width – 26 inches , 66 cm

Depth – 11 inches , 28 cm

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cascading or waterfall bookcase features graduated open shelves that narrow in depth from bottom to top, creating a stepped profile that optimises light and access to stored books or decorative items.

Pieces from or inspired by this period commonly utilise figure-rich burr walnut veneers, shaped crestings, serpentine open sides, cabriole legs, and pad or ball-and-claw feet.

Authentic burr walnut displays natural grain variations, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, hand-carved leg detailing, and signs of genuine age such as subtle surface patination and historic timber shrinkage.

Place the unit against a neutral wall to highlight its rich wood grain, arranging a mix of hardback volumes, ceramic vessels, and small framed artwork on the terraced shelves for balanced visual texture.

Preserve burr walnut by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating sources, and applying a quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.
