Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fireplace fenders emerged in eighteenth-century France as decorative and protective barriers placed around the hearth to retain stray embers. During the Louis XV period, metalworkers crafted these pieces with asymmetry, rococo scrolls, and detailed figurative sculpture to match opulent salon interiors.

Traditional French fenders were predominantly cast in brass or bronze, often gilded using the gilt-bronze (ormolu) process. The construction involved individual cast components, including pierced galleries and decorative end finials, joined together with hand-cut iron bolts and rods.

Authentic pieces display heavy cast metal construction, hand-chased surface details, and irregular hand-threaded fixings on the underside. Original metalwork also exhibits natural surface patination and oxidisation within deeper recesses rather than uniform modern plating.

Position the fender directly on the hearth surface surrounding a traditional fireplace opening or a modern log stove. The metallic finish adds warmth and textural contrast when paired with natural stone, marble hearths, or contemporary muted paint schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clear intricate relief work. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or chemical polishes that strip away the aged patination; a light application of microcrystalline wax preserves the surface depth.
