This Georgian pair of William IV sterling silver table salts dates from 1834 and originates from London, made by Benjamin Preston. The set employs a heavy gauge of silver with a bright polished finish, combined with a rich yellow gold vermeil wash to the interior bowls. Each salt features a lobed bulbous body, a flared scalloped rim, and stands upon four cast acanthus leaf and shell feet. Measuring 6 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, these functional tableware pieces serve as elegant salt cellars for a dining table center. They provide an attractive addition to period table settings or silver collections for holding seasonings during meals.

William IV silver table salts are small open receptacles produced between 1830 and 1837 designed to hold salt at dining tables. They typically feature elaborate relief ornamentation, heavy cast bases, and gilded interior bowls to protect the metal from chemical reactions with salt.

Antique salts were primarily crafted from solid sterling silver with a minimum purity of 925 parts per thousand. The interior bowls were frequently gilded with a layer of gold, known as vermeil, to prevent corrosion caused by sodium chloride.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps, including the monarch profile duty mark, the leopard head for London, the lion passant for sterling purity, and a date letter. Construction signs such as cast foot joins and hand-chased decorative lobing also indicate period origin.

These small decorative vessels function as elegant condiment containers, butter cellars, or ring dishes on a dressing table. Grouping them alongside contemporary glassware creates a refined contrast on a dining table or sideboard.

Clean the exterior with a soft cloth and specialist silver polish while avoiding harsh abrasives. Wipe the gilded interior gently using warm water and mild soap, as abrasive rubbing will wear away the gold wash layer over time.
