This pair of wall sconces dates from the late 19th century in the Art Nouveau style. The items are manufactured from cast bronze and brass in a gold colour, incorporating winged crests, double candle arms, scale patterning, and stylised fins. Visible details include cast relief scale motifs along the central vertical bodies, fan-shaped pleated wing structures spreading outwards on both sides, and spherical candle sockets mounted on curving dual branch arms. Each sconce measures 42 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. Such wall-mounted lighting pieces suit placement on narrow wall spaces in living rooms, hallways, or dining areas. They function effectively as functional ambient illumination while serving as sculptural decorative fixtures against vertical surfaces.

Stile Liberty, the Italian manifestation of Art Nouveau, emerged around the turn of the 20th century and is characterised by sinuous lines, winged crests, and stylized natural forms. Wall sconces from this period served both functional lighting needs and acted as sculptural decorative accents.

Artisans predominantly crafted these fixtures from cast bronze, brass, or gilded metals using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. Surfaces were subsequently hand-chased, polished, or patinated to create contrast and accentuate relief details.

Authentic period sconces display precise casting details, hand-finished surfaces, and natural oxidisation within recessed areas. Original pieces also show historical wear patterns around mounting plates and candle nozzles rather than uniform artificial distress.

Positioning a pair of sconces on a narrow wall space, flanking a chimneypiece, or accenting a hallway mirror introduces architectural interest and warm candlelight, complementing both traditional and maximalist decor schemes.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush to clean deep relief areas. Avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip original patinas and protective wax layers.
