This antique Bakshaish village rug belongs to the Persian tribal style from the period around 1900. It is constructed from a hand-knotted fine wool pile set onto a cotton foundation, displaying an all-over low even pile with secured ends and sides. The palette incorporates navy blue, terracotta, and cream tones, complemented by pale blue and muted red accents. A large geometric central medallion dominates the design, floating against a dark blue ground, whilst the cream field contains numerous birds and peacocks, including pairs positioned within the central pointed pendant pole ends. The patterned borders feature stepped motifs and angular tribal symbols. The floor covering measures 175 cm high by 130 cm wide with a depth of 0.7 cm, providing a practical scale for placement in an English country house interior, such as a study, hallway, or living room. The piece integrates well beneath furniture arrangements or as a central floor accent on hardwood and carpeted surfaces.

Originating from North-West Persia, Bakshaish rugs are distinguished by their expressive geometric interpretations of classical Persian medallion designs, abstract animal and floral motifs, and relaxed, village-knotted construction.

These carpets are constructed using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit stylized, angular drawing rather than formal curvilinear patterns, asymmetric hand-knotted construction, subtle colour variations (abrash), and a flexible handle.

A geometric village rug creates grounding visual contrast against modern minimalist furniture, polished concrete, or original hardwood floors, introducing texture and historical context.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating brush bar, rotate annually to ensure even wear, address spills immediately with cold water and clean cloth blotters, and use a suitable rug underlay.
