Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Natural dye abrash across the field: traditional small-batch yarn dyeing.
Madder red spandrels with tribal birds: South Persian village weaving.
Lustrous hand-spun wool pile: early twentieth-century weaving craft.
Soft variations in the indigo and terracotta colours: plant-based dyes.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Afshar rugs are hand-knotted textiles woven by the nomadic and semi-nomadic Afshar tribe, located predominantly in Kerman province in southern Iran. These carpets are recognised for incorporating geometric medallion designs, stylised botanical or zoomorphic motifs, and deep navy or crimson dyes.

Afshar rugs are traditionally crafted using hand-spun wool pile tied onto a wool or cotton warp and weft structure. Historically, weavers used natural, plant-based dyes to create rich indigo blues, deep madder reds, ochres, and ivory accents.

Authentic Afshar rugs display hand-tied asymmetrical or symmetrical knots visible on the reverse face, along with a flexible handle and dense wool pile. They often feature characteristic stepped spandrels, central geometric medallions, and subtle colour variations known as abrash due to small-batch dyeing.

An Afshar rug provides anchor and warmth when positioned beneath clean-lined contemporary furniture or paired with traditional dark wood antiques. Placing the rug in a sitting room, dining area, or study introduces graphic geometry and saturated colour tones into the space.

Vacuum the carpet regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the hand-knotted wool fibres with a rotating brush. Blot liquid spills immediately with a dry cloth, and arrange professional hand-washing periodically to maintain the structural integrity and natural dyes.
