Elegant Rare Pair of Doulton Lambeth Faience Vases – Slaters Patent, C.1880

19th century
Description

Rare Pair of Doulton Lambeth Faience Vases – Slaters Patent, c.1880

An attractive and rare pair of Doulton Lambeth faience vases, dating to circa 1880, showcasing the distinctive Slaters Patent technique. The vases feature a richly textured body with superimposed decoration of white flowers and dark green stems, animated by a finely detailed hovering hornet, creating a striking sense of depth and movement.

The Slaters Patent process involved rolling clay with textile or other materials to achieve its characteristic texture, after which the applied and painted decoration was added. This complex method typically requires the collaboration of several artists, and multiple initials are present on the base. The initials ‘MB’ identify Mary Butterton, the principal decorator and a well-regarded artist at the Doulton Lambeth studio.

Condition:

One vase has damage to its rim, but this does not significantly detract from its overall visual impact. From a display perspective, the pair remains highly attractive. Otherwise, they are in fabulous condition, with no further notable issues.

Marks:

Both vases are very well marked to the base, clearly indicating Doulton Lambeth manufacture, artist involvement, and the Slaters Patent technique.

Dimensions:

Height: 25.5 cm

Notes:

Faience wares using the Slater's Patent technique are increasingly scarce, particularly in paired form and with such strong decorative appeal. A desirable and decorative set, ideal for collectors of Doulton Lambeth, Arts & Crafts ceramics, or distinctive Victorian design.
