FAQs

Upholstered footstools and ottomans gained prominence in European interiors during the late 17th and 18th centuries, evolving from simple low seating and foot rests into substantial, decorative pieces used for comfort and flexible seating.

Traditional construction typically features a solid hardwood frame, such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, joined with traditional joinery, topped with hand-stitched upholstery, natural stuffing materials, and supported by turned wooden legs often featuring castors.

Authentic pieces can be identified by hand-carved wooden elements, traditional joinery methods, period-appropriate textile wear, hand-forged or brass castors, and aged internal padding materials consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

A large footstool can serve dual purposes as a comfortable footrest or as an alternative coffee table when topped with a sturdy wooden tray, adding texture, pattern, and warmth to contemporary living spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, protection from direct sunlight to prevent textile fading, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the fabric, and occasionally treating exposed wooden legs with appropriate furniture wax.
