A silver gilt condiment tub is a small vessel crafted from silver covered with a thin layer of gold, historically used on formal dining tables to hold salts, mustards, or other fine spices during meals.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver and finished using a process called vermeil or fire gilding, where an amalgam of gold and mercury is applied to the silver surface and heated.

Authentication involves examining the makers marks, assay office stamps, and date letters, alongside observing the natural wear patterns and the characteristic warm tone of genuine historical gilding over silver.

This piece can be placed on a sideboard or mantelpiece as a focal point of metallic texture, contrasting against modern minimalist decor or complementing a classic tablescape.

Silver gilt should be cleaned extremely gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive silver polishes or dips which can strip away the delicate gold layer.
