Description

A beautiful German Hanau solid silver box. It is hallmarked with the German 800 standard mark, the German crescent moon and crown mark along with the Hanau maker B. Neresheimer & Sohne. I would date it to c1900. It has been superbly made being of love heart form and decorated with two couples. It is in super condition being free from dings splits holes and repair. It measures over 1.25 inches (3.7cm) across by almost the the same front to back by over 0.25 inch (0.9cm) tall and weighs 10 grams. A very pretty piece.

FAQs

Hanau silver refers to silver items manufactured in the German town of Hanau during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. Many workshops specialized in producing high-quality replicas and revival pieces inspired by earlier historical styles, often utilizing pseudo-hallmarks that mimic older European silver marks.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cloth to preserve desirable patination and fine details. Avoid harsh chemical dips, which can strip away intentional oxidisation and damage delicate repousse work.

An antique silver box serves as an excellent decorative accent when placed on a dressing table, bookshelf, or coffee table tray. Its reflective metallic surface adds texture and historic contrast to contemporary minimalist or transitional decor.

Authenticity is determined by examining the metal purity, craftsmanship quality, and specific maker marks or pseudo-hallmarks. Hanau pieces frequently bear spurious marks designed to resemble older English, Dutch, or German hallmarks rather than standard town marks.

These decorative boxes were typically crafted using traditional silversmithing techniques such as repousse and chasing. Craftsmen worked the metal from the reverse side to push out three-dimensional relief scenes, followed by detailed hand-engraving on the front surface.
