Large Old Sheffield Plate Communion Chalice 1840

Description

A large communion chalice made of Old Sheffield Plate. Wonderfully proportioned piece with engraving to the front for 'Barbican Chapel 1840'. With a beautiful gilded interior and of good heavy quality. Visibly seamed to the reverse.

The condition is very good overall with no dents or splits. The plating is in good order with slight wear around the rim.

Weight approx 690g.

Height approx 20.5cm.

Base diameter approx 10cm.

Diameter at rim approx 11cm.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process developed in the 1740s where a layer of sterling silver was thermally fused to a thicker ingot of copper before being rolled into sheets. This manufacturing method was widely utilised until the commercial introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

Pieces were created by hammering or pressing fused copper and silver sheets into shape. Interior surfaces intended for holding liquids were frequently gilded with gold wash to prevent corrosion and chemical reactions between the copper base and acidic contents.

Authentic items often exhibit thin traces of the copper core showing through where the silver layer has worn, known as bleeding. They also feature wrapped solid silver wire rims to conceal copper edges, along with struck makers marks rather than modern electroplate hallmarks.
