Description

A splendid unused 62 piece mahogany canteen of cutlery by mappin & webb. Princes plate. Circa 1920.

This canteen is a true 'sleeper' as it has never been used and is in excellent condition. Princes plate was a superior style by mappin & webb and incorporated a process of triple plating that ensured very long lasting finish and durability.

All handles fashioned in ivorine. (this being a contemporary substitute for ivory).

This set is for six place settings and includes carving knife and fork, sauce ladles, fish knives and forks etc, etc, the images show all facets of the collection. The only missing item is the knife sharpener which is an advantage as sharpeners were responsible for ruining bladed items.

A canteen of cutlery is a fitted box or chest designed to store a complete set of tableware securely. Silver plating techniques developed significantly during the 19th century, making elegant flatware accessible to a broader middle-class demographic and leading to a surge in the production of fitted canteens.

Chests were typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring fitted interiors lined with baize, velvet, or felt. The cutlery itself generally comprises silver-plated or sterling silver components, frequently paired with bone, ivory, or celluloid handles.

Authentic sets usually display makers marks or hallmarks stamped onto the metal blades or stems, indicating the manufacturer, such as Mappin & Webb, alongside symbols denoting silver plating quality or metal composition. Examining the dovetail joinery and brass hardware of the wooden case also helps verify period authenticity.

An antique wooden chest can be displayed closed upon a sideboard, buffet, or console table to add warmth, texture, and a sense of history to a dining room. Alternatively, the fitted interior can be utilised to organise contemporary dining accessories or small collectables.

Keep the wooden exterior nourished using microcrystalline wax or appropriate furniture polish, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity. For silver-plated items, store them in tarnish-resistant cloth and clean periodically with specialised, non-abrasive silver polish to maintain their lustre.
