This nineteenth-century Empire style stool adopts an antique Neo-Classical X-frame design with a concave upholstered seat in a vibrant red hue set against a gold finish. The show wood is gilded, incorporating classic carved rosettes on the central blocks and shaped scroll arms terminating in turned handles with a studded trim along the upholstery edge. The sturdy x-frame legs terminate in scroll-carved feet, reflecting French Chateau aesthetics. Measuring 51 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this piece serves as a distinctive seating option or a decorative accent. It sits well at the foot of the bed in a bedroom, functions as an occasional stool in a living area, or provides a stylish dressing table seat in a hallway or dressing room.

An Empire style X-frame stool, often referred to as a curule stool, is an accent seat inspired by ancient Roman and Greek folding chairs. Popularised in early 19th-century France, these stools feature crossed legs forming an X silhouette, carved decorative detail, and a concave upholstered seat.

Traditional construction relies on carved hardwoods such as beech or oak, covered with gesso and gold leaf gilding. Seats are traditionally upholstered using horsehair padding, woven webbing, and secured with brass tacks.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, natural wear to the gilding showing white gesso layers beneath, and age-related oxidisation. Modern reproductions often show uniform synthetic gold paint and machine-cut framework.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted lightly using a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth to avoid flaking the gold leaf. Damp cloths and chemical polish must be avoided, and the piece should be kept in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat.

An Empire stool works well as a statement piece positioned at the foot of a bed, within a fireplace alcove, or as occasional seating in a hallway. Its classical proportions complement both period homes and eclectic modern spaces.
