Antique Silver Recumbent Pig Pin Cushion

1900 - 1920
Description

This is charming - a novelty antique sterling silver pin cushion, this one fashioned as a recumbant pig.

He is hallmarked for Chester 1922 with the maker's mark of W J Myatt & Co. His cushion looks to be original and the silver is in a good condition - there are some small creases where the silver meets the leather base and one very small tear, just behind the rear leg. Perhaps that's why he looks so glum?

Dimensions:

Length: 8cm

Width: 4.5cm

Height: 2cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, produced by silversmiths in various animal forms including pigs, chicks, and elephants. Pigs were particularly favored motifs as symbols of good luck and prosperity at the turn of the twentieth century.

These items typically feature a cast sterling silver or silver-plated hollow base filled with wood wool, sawdust, or cotton wool, topped with a velvet or silk fabric lining designed to hold steel sewing pins securely without rusting.

Authentic period pieces usually feature British hallmarks or makers marks stamped around the base edge or back of the silver cast. Original velvet inserts often show appropriate age-related wear, and the silver casting exhibits crisp hand-chased detailing rather than modern crude molding.

Place the pincushion on a writing desk, vanity table, or bookshelf alongside leather-bound books and brass desk accessories. It can also be incorporated into a dedicated display case for vintage needlework tools and small silver novelties.

Gently polish the silver surface using a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth and a suitable silver polish, taking care to avoid contact with the fabric cushion. Store in a dry environment to prevent excessive oxidisation and moisture damage to the internal filling.
