Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 17th century, coffers, often referred to as cassoni in Italy, served as primary storage vessels for household linens, textiles, and valuables. Cedarwood was particularly favoured across Mediterranean regions due to its natural aromatic properties, which helped deter moths and other insects.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timber panels such as cedarwood or oak using hand-cut joinery and wrought-iron hardware. Decorative embellishments often involved pokerwork, shallow incised line carving, or chip-carving depicting heraldic imagery, mythical beasts, and foliate scrollwork.

Authentic period coffers exhibit signs of natural wear, hand-planed interior surfaces, irregular hand-forged ironwork, and historical peg or dovetail construction. The retention of early incised decoration and the subtle, persistent aroma of aged cedarwood also assist in verification.

A carved antique coffer functions as a focal architectural piece when placed at the foot of a bed, in a entrance hall, or utilised as a low coffee table substitute in a living space. Its rich timber tones provide textural contrast alongside contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Preserve historical timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a thin coat of clear beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish. Maintain a stable indoor environment away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement or cracking.
