This lovely calling card tray is made of Old Sheffield Plate and dates to the late 18th Century. Standing well on three ball and claw feet with an etched decoration and faintly crested.

In good condition with some copper bleed to the raised edges due to age and use. No dents or splits.

Old Sheffield Plate was invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, who discovered that copper and silver could be fused together through heat and pressure. Small card waiters were produced throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries to receive calling cards presented by visitors to Georgian households.

These pieces were constructed by sandwiching a thick ingot of copper between two thinner sheets of sterling silver. The fused metal block was then rolled into thin sheets, hand-hammered, and shaped using steel dies, with decorative borders soldered around the perimeter to conceal the copper core.

Authentic pieces often exhibit slight copper exposure, known as bleeding, where silver has worn away through decades of polishing. They also feature turned-over silver edges, wire backs, and die-struck decorative borders rather than modern electroplating hallmarks.

A small silver waiter serves as a functional display dish on an entry hall console table, a bedroom dressing table for jewellery, or an office desk for stationery accessories. The reflective metallic surface adds subtle light and texture to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Wash gently in warm water with mild soap and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent moisture damage. Use specialised non-abrasive silver polish sparingly, as aggressive cleaning can strip away the original fused silver layer and expose the underlying copper core.
