Edwardian silver menu holders became popular during the early 20th century as formal dining reached new heights of elaboration in upper-class British households. These small decorative objects were utilised to display printed menus and place cards at formal dinner parties.

These pieces are typically crafted from sterling silver using traditional manufacturing methods such as casting, piercing, and hand-chasing. Hallmarks stamped onto the metal indicate the assay office, standard of silver, and year of production.

Authentic pieces bear legible British hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark corresponding to the Edwardian era between 1901 and 1910. Genuine items also exhibit the characteristic weight, patina, and hand-finished details typical of early twentieth-century silversmithing.

These versatile items can be repurposed in contemporary dining settings to hold place cards, small photographs, or recipe cards during dinner parties. They add a subtle touch of historic craftsmanship and metallic texture to tablescapes and mantelpieces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a professional silver cloth or gentle polish formulated specifically for precious metals, avoiding abrasive substances. Store them in a tarnish-resistant cloth or dry environment to protect the surface polish and intricate details.
