Description

A rare very large Georgian English antique solid sterling silver chalice or goblet. It is hallmarked for London 1800 with the maker being possibly Robert Gaze. It has been superbly designed and the inside of the cup is gilded. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits distortions and repairs, I think the hallmarks must have split the base rim when struck but was put right when returned to the silversmith as their makers marks over strike it (see final photo). It measures over 7 inches (18.3cm) tall by over 4 inches (10.4cm) across the rim by the same across the base and is heavy weighting 372 grams (not weighted). A very good quality well made piece.

Georgian silver chalices were produced during the reigns of Kings George I through George IV (17141830), a period marked by refined neoclassical and rococo silversmithing techniques used predominantly for ecclesiastical and domestic purposes.

These items were typically handcrafted from sterling silver, often featuring a gilded interior known as wash-gilding or vermeil, and constructed using traditional techniques such as raising, spinning, and casting for the stem and foot.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmark stamps, including the assay office mark, date letter, sterling standard lion passant, and makers mark, alongside characteristic weight, hand-hammered interior tool marks, and period-appropriate patination.

An antique chalice can be displayed as a standalone decorative object on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or sideboard, contrasting its historic metallic sheen with modern minimalist or traditional maximalist decor schemes.

Preservation requires storing silver in a tarnish-resistant environment with stable humidity, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes, and cleaning only with specialized microfibre cloths and professional non-abrasive silver dips when strictly necessary.
