Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire lighting originated during Napoleon Bonapartes reign, drawing visual inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian classical architecture. Common hallmarks include symmetrical silhouettes, dark patinated metal contrasted with gilded bronze (ormolu), leaf motifs, and formal urn forms.

These lighting fixtures were primarily constructed using heavy cast bronze, which was frequently mercury-gilded to achieve a bright gold finish. The central body often featured dark green or black patinated bronze or brass to create contrast with the bright gilded elements.

Authentic period pieces exhibit high-density cast bronze with hand-chased decorative details such as acanthus leaves, rosette medallions, and anthemion motifs. They also show signs of historic hand-casting techniques, thread patterns consistent with early manufacturing, and natural oxidisation on unpolished metal surfaces.

Positioning a classic Neoclassical chandelier above a modern dining table or in an entryway creates architectural contrast. Pair the dark patinated metal and gilt highlights with minimalist wall moulding, neutral colour palettes, and tailored upholstery to ground the space.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth or delicate feather duster to prevent grime accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasives, or water on original gilding, as these can strip historical patination and gilt layers.
