Late 19th-century brooches frequently featured sentimental motifs such as hearts, bows, and floral clusters, often incorporating precious and semi-precious gemstones set in silver or gold.

Jewellery from this period commonly utilised sterling silver, rolled gold, or base metals set with natural stones such as amethyst, garnet, paste, or seed pearls.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the construction of the pin stem, the presence of traditional C-clasps or barrel catches, hand-cut stone settings, and period-appropriate metal patination.

These pieces can be pinned to modern lapels, velvet headbands, silk scarves, or displayed within small glass dome frames as decorative objects of curiosity.

Silver should be stored in anti-tarnish pouches away from moisture and cleaned gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage softer gemstones like amethyst.
