A delightful joint oak stool dating from the mid 17th century.

C-1650

The rectangular top has a moulded edge over a very pretty carved and punch work decorated frieze.

Standing on ring turned legs united by square stretchers.

Showing the charming protruding original hand made oak pegs throughout.

A wonderful very versatile true antique, which could be a stool, a small side table or footstool, or simply decorative adding charm to an interior.

Solid, sturdy and strong.

Lovely characterful and warm patina.

In excellent antique condition. Expected signs of age and use.

FAQs

A joint stool gets its name from the joined or framed construction using mortise and tenon joints pegged together by a cabinetmaker. Historically, these sturdy items were used as primary seating at the dining table, with the head of the household or honoured guests occupying them while others sat on long benches.

These pieces are constructed almost exclusively from solid English oak, shaped using hand axes, pit saws, and drawknives before the widespread adoption of veneer. Construction relies on pegged mortise and tenon joints, creating a rigid frame without modern metal fasteners.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut peg holes that are slightly out of round, and extensive surface patination accumulated over centuries of waxing and handling. Tool marks left by pit saws and adzes on the underside and internal surfaces also indicate genuine age.

Due to its modest scale and flat top, a historic timber stool functions well as a bedside table, a side table next to a contemporary sofa, or a display surface for lamps and sculptures. The rich, dark wood grain introduces warmth and historical contrast into minimalist or transitional spaces.

Maintain the timber by applying traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the dry wood and preserve the surface sheen. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber splitting, and avoid modern silicone-based polishes.
