This pair of Victorian candlesticks, made around 1850 in the English Country House style, consists of solid brass objects with a warm metallic brass finish. Each piece displays an urn-shaped sconce at the top, a distinctive open barley twist stem, and a stepped circular base at the bottom, showing gentle surface wear and minor tarnishing consistent with age. They measure 31 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep, providing substantial presence for domestic display. These candlesticks work well placed on a mantelpiece or sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway to bring traditional character and warm ambient lighting to the interior scheme.

FAQs

Popularised during the late 17th century and widely revived during the Victorian era, barley twist designs feature helical, corkscrew-like stems created through specialised woodturning or metallic casting techniques.

Antique brass candlesticks were typically sand-cast or machine-turned in sections before being assembled with threaded interior rods, often displaying subtle seam lines or jointing marks near the base.

Authentic pieces usually display hand-cut interior threading, slight weight variations from manual casting, and natural oxidisation within the deep grooves of the twist and underneath the base.

Positioning them in pairs on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard adds verticality and period charm, contrasting effectively against both contemporary minimalist and traditional backdrops.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised metal polish, avoiding abrasive scrubbers that could remove the historic patina or scratch the brass surface.
