FAQs

Windsor seating originated in rural England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular wheelwright techniques where turned legs and spindles were socketed directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional construction typically utilised a combination of woods chosen for specific structural properties, such as elm for the carved saddle seats due to its resistance to splitting, and ash or beech for the turned legs and stretchers.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as wedged through-tenons, hand-turned components with minor tool irregularities, and natural timber shrinkage, wear patterns, and patination consistent with age.

Antique wooden stools provide organic warmth and tactile contrast in modern spaces, functioning effectively as informal seating, plant stands, or occasional side tables in minimalist or transitional rooms.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber without sealing the surface.
