Technical Description
A superb 18th century Anglo Irish facet cut cordial glass dating to c1740.
It has a small drawn trumpet bowl with a band of OXO engraving. Sits on a very thick drawn stem with large diamond facet cuts above a wide conical folded foot.
Based on the form and metal, the glass dates to c1740. The thickness of the stem and large cuts may point to an Irish origin. The foot, proportionally is very wide, with a wide fold, again pointing to an early date.
The only question is, when was the cutting actually done. There are two schools of thought, in that the cutting was either done when the glass was manufactured eg c1740 or it was done during the later ''Facet Cut Era'' was in fashion eg c1780.
Early facet cut glass does exists from that period, primarily on the continent, but there are documented early examples of English glasses having facet cuts, apparently done in the earlier period.
This example is exceptionally rare. Facet cut drawn trumpets are ra
...re, thick stemmed examples are rare, facet cut cordials are rare, folded feet on facet cut glasses are rare.
