Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency bookcase is made of rich brown mahogany with ormolu mounts and measures 191 cm high, 103 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. The two-height piece comprises a top section with an arched pediment, brass wire grilles on the upper doors, and fluted pilasters, above a lower cabinet with panelled cupboard doors and a single drawer. Additional visual details visible on the timber include brass mounts at the top and bottom of the pilasters, a decorative brass fixture centrally positioned on the frieze above the lower doors, and another decorative brass motif centered on the upper arch. In a contemporary home, this two-section bookcase functions well in a living room, study, or hallway to store and display books and decorative objects behind glass or wire doors.

FAQs

Regency furniture, dating from roughly 1811 to 1830, is defined by neoclassical influence, symmetrical forms, and clean architectural lines. Pieces frequently feature rich woods like mahogany and rosewood, augmented with brass inlays, grilles, and gilded metal mounts inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian design.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period primarily utilised high-grade flame mahogany and rosewood veneers laid over oak or pine carcases. Decorative elements typically incorporated cast brass grilles, brass strung borders, and gilded ormolu capitals along fluted pilasters.

Authentic Regency cabinets demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, and genuine hand-drawn brass wire grilles. Look for period-appropriate wear on the underside of base rails, original brass locks, and subtle irregularities inherent to hand-carved fluted columns and timber cut with pit saws.

A substantial mahogany cabinet serves as a focal point when placed against neutral or deeply saturated wall shades like navy or olive green. Style the interior shelves with a balanced mix of leather-bound books, ceramic vessels, and framed artwork to soften the dark wood tones and integrate the piece into contemporary living spaces.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber patina. Avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight, and clean brass grilles using a dry soft brush to prevent moisture damage to the surrounding wood finish.
