Mid Century Finnish Silver Pendant

1940 - 1960
Description

A mid-century Finnish silver pendant by Kupittaan Kulta. One of the rings carries all the marks for Finland and the makers mark. The bottom ring has Swedish marks on it, which would indicate that it was imported into Sweden at some point. Silver chain is marked 835S, I don’t think it is the original one. The pendant has been constructed with two pieces joined together. Lovely condition.

Pendant drop 4 x 2 cm

Chain length 21 cm

This mid-century modern Finnish silver pendant by Kupittaan Kulta comes from 1960. Constructed with two pieces joined together, the rectangular sterling silver pendant features openwork geometric cut-outs and is suspended from a fine curb chain. One of the rings carries Finnish marks and the maker's mark, while the bottom ring has Swedish marks indicating importation into Sweden. The silver chain is marked 835S and is a replacement rather than the original. The piece exhibits a silver colour with a polished metallic finish and shows lovely condition overall. The pendant measures 4 cm by 2 cm with a chain length of 21 cm. It is worn around the neck as a necklace in everyday settings.

Mid-Century Finnish silver jewellery is recognised for its modernist aesthetic, featuring clean geometric shapes, organic abstraction, and structural minimalism popularised between the 1950s and 1970s.

Craftsmen typically utilised high-purity sterling silver, often employing openwork casting, hand-filing, and geometric cut-outs to create dynamic light play across polished surfaces.

Authentic pieces carry standard Finnish hallmarks, including the national crown mark, a makers mark, a purity mark such as 830 or 925, and a date code consisting of a letter and number combination.

Architectural silver jewellery functions as a statement piece that pairs effectively with minimalist clothing, tailored attire, or plain monochromatic fabrics to highlight its sculptural lines.

Store the piece in a dry, tarnish-resistant pouch and gently wipe with a soft microfibre polish cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can strip natural patina from recessed areas.
