Early Victorian Double Series Opaque Twist Wine Glass, Scottish Interest

19th century
Description

This is an early Victorian, Scottish, engraved, mouth-blown, double series opaque twist stem wine glass, probably made in the Louth glassworks and dating from the middle of the 19th century, c1840.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 180 years of use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with a band of engraved oak leaves and acorns just under the rim and sits on a merise and a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two white enamel cords wound around a central lace twist. The stem leads to a conical foot that measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.3 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

Lead glass weighing in at 110 g. (~ 4 oz.).
